Shortly after Jay passed away, we began receiving calls asking what people could do in Jay’s honor and where they could make donations on his behalf. Because of the unbelievable number of people wanting to help and our desire to honor Jay in the best way possible, we did not want to pick charities casually, but rather to take the time to fully explore the most appropriate way to ensure that Jay’s passion and zest for life continue to grow and to affect people in a manner consistent with how he lived everyday.
We proudly established the James Joseph Kaplan Foundation through which we hope to ensure the continuation of Jay’s creativity, passion for filmmaking, and love of life, in addition to contributing to charitable activities we feel Jay would have supported. The foundation was established as a donor-advised fund of the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, one of the largest 501(c)3 public charities in the country.
We will keep you posted here as we continue to identify the most appropriate uses of the funds. All activities will have a charitable purpose, and all donations are tax-deductible. It is our sincerest hope and intention that the James Joseph Kaplan Foundation grows into a sustained fund that supports deserving individuals, innovative filmmakers, and other worthwhile charitable activities for many years to come.
